NSW Polocrosse selected 12 sub juniors to represent NSW at 200th Sydney Royal Easter Show. The teams of sub juniors were coached by the very experienced Christine Brooker with Fiona expertly managing the teams and their parents / carers.
Christine and Fiona generously donated their time and experience, through ensuring the competition remains as an event at the RAS, through the promotion of our sport and negotiation with the RAS. This is a wonderful experience for the subbies and their supporters alike. To be given the opportunity to showcase polocrosse to such a wide and varying range of spectators is an honour and valuable experience and exciting event for the subbies.
In additional to everything else Christine and Fiona have done in arrangements they obtained sponsors, playing shirts, saddle cloths, prizes and the very experienced and entertaining announcer Jim Calihan to commentate each game.
Players and their parents arrived at the showground on Friday and Saturday in preparation for the games. Christine took the kids for a ride to sort players into teams for the 4-match series.
The teams were chosen with a blue team and a gold team. They were very even with all four games going down to the wire, which kept the crowd cheering for more and the families on the edge of their seats.
The first game saw the blue team narrowly defeated by 1 goal to the gold team, with the first section of Nikko Anderson, Tori Carter and `Maxwell Schaefer and the second section of Emily Edwards, Abbey Grills and Kaitlan Schwagger making up the gold team.
The following two games were won again in a similar fashion with the gold team taking the honours by a nail bitting one goal lead each game.
The final game was an exciting spectacle with the blue team coming away victorious. The blue team was led by the first section of Joshua Bourke, William Schaefer, and Ned Thompson and the second section of Lucy Arentz, Skyla Mulligan and Sophie Tuncliff.
The final game was another goal for goal game, with the crowd getting in on the action cheering on their chosen teams.
As the first section of the blue team rode onto the field with a glint in their eyes, Lucy was in the hot seat playing a 1 up the front, she had a blinder, it should be mentioned she had never played a number 1 prior to the RAS. Lucy threw 4 goals in quick succession, with the score reading 4-0 at the end of the first chukka.
As the final chukka bell rang the blue team successfully won the game by four goals.
Through the two days the kid’s skills, horsemanship and confidence grew. It was such an amazing and unforgettable experience, which I am sure they will never forget.
All kids, parents and spectators had a fabulous weekend. And many thanks to Christine and Fiona for ensuring this event happens and their time and expertise in arranging the event and coaching the kids they are great ambassadors for our sport. The RAS for allowing the kids this wonderful experience.
A special thanks to Tanya Mulligan and Falcon for umiring the games she did an outstanding job.
